Ok, so that's two exceptional episodes out of two so far... this is hauntingly brilliant...

And your characters are equally well drawn. And the underlying sense of menace...

Your kind words keep me going! I happened to read them as I was working on some later chapters, and it helped to know that someone was out there reading and enjoying Dark as Dawn!

I also had the feeling there's a fair bit of Neil Gaiman in there - kind of gothic comic-style otherworldly entities. That's a good thing, by the way - I'm a big Gaiman fan (once a goth, always a goth, you know!).

I'm glad I'm giving you a boost! You deserve it.

I’m not joking when I tell you that Neil Gaiman is my favorite author! It’s Neverwhere that lit a fire within me to write my own fantasy. So for you to say my writing’s reminiscent of his style makes my dark little heart rejoice. <3

:) It's definitely Gaiman-esque (if that's even a word). That thing where the other world is sort of just over there, and intersects with this one, although most people don't see it. Plus the dark elements. I also get the impression you think quite visually when you write - I find it easy to 'see' what's going on, and that's the kind of stuff I like reading. Also makes it perfectly doable as a comic.

My Katrina has a lot of Death about her, while we're on the subject of Neil Gaiman, partly in her looks and partly because she has that quirky thing going on. I did get typically postmodern at one point by having her filmography (from her origin world) include her being friends with Gaiman as a result of which she ends up playing Death in a film called Sandman: Insomnia, which is a kind of prequel to Preludes & Nocturnes, in which Dream can't sleep, because some of the other endless have been playing mischief on him, and what effect that has on the 'real' world, if people can't dream anymore. I think you might like the first version of her origin story (D-zero meson oscillation - go to Alters Index and scroll down for the link), as that was deliberately written in a sort of cinematic, visual style, with lots of pop culture references (there's also one in the most recent scene in the serial).

So I think you have that kind of thing going on too, the visual, cinematic I mean. It's really good. I would imagine Neil Gaiman would like it too (I haven't met him though, I should add, before you start expecting some kind of pretentious name drop!).

I just finished your chapter 3, btw - just as wonderful as 1 & 2...

Love Sandman! Adding your short story recommendation to my afternoon reading directly.

And yes, you’re quite right about the visual thinking—it can be both a blessing and a curse. Good for world-building but I have to remind myself not to let it get in the way of the plot! :)

Tarot, Neil Gaiman, writing fantasy - are you my long-lost twin? lol.
